PEAK Scholars Make the Most of Summer Break

While school was out for the summer, PEAK scholars stayed busy with camps, jobs, and volunteer work. Two scholars share what they've been involved with this past summer:

Scholar: Ahlyna '20

What is the program you're in this summer?

College health science scholars summer program with Malcolm X College.

Why did this program interest you?

It was something for me to gain experience for my career choice and see what I am really going to commit to for my life.

What kinds of things have you done at this program so far?

I have learned a lot about minorities and our struggles to overcome stereotypes. I also touched a cadaver- she was 18 years old, it was heartbreaking, but also was great experience. I visited the virtual hospital and learned how to wrap a sprained ankle and wrist and how to do the Heimlich maneuver. It was cool because the patients were robots and could actually talk.

What are you most looking forward to?

Seeing if what I learned in Algebra and Biology will help prepare me for my sophomore year- I am so excited to just thrive!

How will this program help your future goals?

It shows me other professions in the medical field and is all about what it takes- not only book smarts but mental strength.

What would you tell other students about this program?

That even though you are technically going to school, it is so worth it. You learn so much about many professions, and it is quite eye opening. You learn about things that you may not have learned in high school or college. It definitely challenges your mind but overall I highly hope more people would consider this once in a lifetime experience.

Scholar: Lavelle '18

What is the program you're in this summer?

I have an internship at The Adler Planetarium.

Why did this program interest you?

Space is awesome, it would improve my public speaking/communication skills, and I was recommended for the job.

What kinds of things have you done at this program so far?

I've facilitated science experiments with guests, on August 5th I'll be taking some experiments to Ford City Mall for a convention, and I've improved my people skills.

What are you most looking forward to?

Bettering myself for my senior year and college and resume building.

How will this program help your future goals?

It has helped build my resume and has made problem solving come as instinct.

What would you tell other students about this program?

It's fun, messy (on purpose), go visit, be prepared to work.
